Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are about 7–8 hours’ drive from Fez, through Ifrane, the Azrou cedar forest (where Barbary macaques live), Midelt and the Ziz valley palm groves.
You arrive in time for a camel ride into the dunes at sunset, dinner and music at the camp, and sunrise over the sand the next morning. Camps range from simple to luxury tents with private bathrooms.
The 3-day version ends in Marrakech via the Todra gorges, Dadès valley and Ouarzazate, which saves you the drive back to Fez.

Is 2 days enough for the desert from Fez?
It works but involves a lot of driving. Three days (ending in Marrakech) is more comfortable and shows more of the south.
What is the best season?
October to April is the most pleasant. Summer days are very hot, though nights in the desert stay beautiful.
