When a guide is worth it
On your first morning, to get your bearings; if you want context on the madrasas, the Quaraouiyine and the crafts quarters; and if your time in Fez is short. A good guide adapts to your interests and only stops in shops if you ask.
Licensed or unofficial?
Licensed guides carry an official badge. Unofficial guides often approach near Bab Bou Jeloud or the tanneries, offering directions. A polite, firm "no thank you" is enough; avoid following anyone who insists.
Exploring on your own
Download an offline map, note your riad’s nearest gate, and remember that going uphill leads back towards Bab Bou Jeloud. Shops and cafés are happy to point the way if you ask.
